“Photography is not about cameras, gadgets and gizmos. Photography is about photographers. A camera didn’t make a great picture any more than a typewriter wrote a great novel.”
– Peter Adams

In this day and age, everyone has a camera in reach. We all know that. What isn’t in reach is the creativity, drive, stamina, and patience that come with the job. (And that’s just the short list!) Just like not everyone could be a nurse, not everyone can be a professional portrait photographer. I admit, my job gets hard. Brides and babies alike cry when they are upset and it’s you’re your job to do everything in your power to make it better. Newborn photography is like hot yoga but in that 85 degree room you’re holding a new soul and a $8000 piece of equipment. It’s not that I just hold a camera, but that I keep everyone feeling good and make them look their best in a creative way.

Kaitlyn is apart of a story that highlights one of the most raw and significant parts of my career that will never leave my mind. Kaitlyn is little sister to Harper. Harper is not just a toddler, but a twin. I was at the hospital on the day of her birth. I was bringing food to a pregnant friend of mine and this family asked me to photograph the urgent event at hand: Harper and her twin, Julie born at 23 weeks. Their chance of survival was a very touchy percentage. Julie passed in the arms of her mother and I photographed her fighting for every second of her life. Silently, I felt so much weight of what I had photographed on their birthdays. It’s something I did not share or spoke with many about because it was such a private and intimate moment where I saw their entire family at their most vulnerable. It may have been the most defining moment that held the meaning of my entire career.

Harper spent months in the NICU and is a very happy and loving little girl. Kaitlyn has now joined their clan. Kaitlyn is the rainbow baby that follows her angel sister, Julie. I wanted to represent her as Spring (since that is her birth season!) because she is new, a fresh growth that brings a new chapter. Also, like her mom requested, putting rainbow tones in things. Kaitlyn was a wonderful baby! You’ll see she gave me a smile and loved clinging to her sister, Harper’s, octopus lovey that is regularly used for preemies who find comfort in holding their cords! (Fun fact!) I know her family is going to enjoy her and I am so happy for their new addition.
